We have family groups here at the school made up of students and staff. So our family taped this video to show and talk about how do we hear the voice of God in our own lives amongst all the distractions of the world. Well hope you enjoy it and it may remind of a nooma video you may have seen before...cheers

Charcoal Iron

So I thought I would put some short written work onto the blog, we have some funny moments and some hard moments here and its hard not to write something about them.

Today we were walking on the way home from the market, when the local girl we were with, Rachelle, collapsed into my arms.  I wasn't sure what was up at first but quickly realized she was having a seizure.  I was able to help her down and Jesse and I kept her protected from hurting herself on the hard red road below her.  By the time she came to, there were at least a hundred people standing all around.  I can't imagine what it looks like for a crowd to see 4 wazungus (whites) hovered over an african girl.  Still with prayer and reasurrance, she came around and was able to walk home with us.  We thank God that we were there and had some experience with epilepsy before.  God continues to be faithful.

another story....

We are on our way to an interview with some guy we know nothing about. On the way over the missionary leans to the back seat to tell Jesse and I that its a good thing we aren't wearing shorts because we are seeing the head of the Asembly of God Churches today. He has had the role for 30 years and he is old. He is one of the most powerful church leaders in all the Congo....
As we get out of the vehicle I look down at my pasty white legs below my pinstriped shorts....Alright legs....you haven't let me down yet.

Well Jesse is in the other Room right now learning to play the Violin.  Apparently the first time did not go so well at home so "friends," lets show this guy some support eh!  Twinkle twinkle little star is squeakin its way out already....you just never know!

Alright, well we are going to play some music with the family, and oh my, I better go clean out the iron I used this morning....yeah thats right, it is a cast iron...well, iron..... and I ironed my trousers with it this morning.....what an experience :)

love you all

July 21, 2009

Hi
This is Curtis' Mom. I want to update you on the African adventure. Curtis is not able to have access to the internet so has asked me to share some long overdue information.

The team made it to Nairobi and after a couple of days they went on the the Turtle Bay
Club Resort north of Mombasa where they joined other missionaries from Wycliffe for a conference. Some of the team lead in worship ministry at the adult sessions while others worked in the children's minisrty. This was a gentle introduction to Africa.

Today is July 21 and I just talked with Curtis. The cell phone is great, but a bit delayed. The team is doing well. They arrived at a village of mainly mud huts that is about 30-45 minutes outside of Mombasa on Thursday, July 16th. This was a change in plans - they had understood that they would be working in the city. The village is not far from a main road but it feels isolated. They are situated in a beautiful valley with a river but it is quite dry in the area. This is their winter. The village is made up of an extended family that lives in the area. Some team members are walking about 1-2 km to meet at the church. The weather is about the same as Alberta these days but more humid. They are finding that the program items (except maybe for the music) that they prepared to use, are being set aside. Playing with the kids and making visits to the church members is what they are spending their time at so far. The team is divided into pairs and is being hosted in the Kenyan homes. The people are poor farmers who grind their corn into meal for the day's food. Some of the team have bed frames and some sleep on the floor - none are very comfortable. Most floors are dirt with the occasional cement floor. Most people speak no English so there is little verbal communication between the team and the family in many of the homes. The Compassion ministries has a connection to this village and has kids coming in on Saturdays. The team was able to take public transportation to Mombasa yesterday - Monday July 20. They were able to buy some supplies such as mosquito nets, water, soccer balls, Swahili bibles, and the most needed toilet paper!

In general, it seems that the team is in good spirits. Everything is so new and some of them struggle more than others with the culture. Continue to pray for them as they make the adjustments. They will be in these homes for about 2 more weeks.

As we talk to Curtis, we will try to update the blog.

Discovery Lodge

We have arrived!  So yesterday we packed our bags and walked out of our house for the last time.  As Jesse and I drove out to the camp we both shared feelings of deep sadness at saying goodbye to the people we love the most!  (which of course is all of you! :)  But as we neared the camp we began to pray and excitement began to burn in our hearts.  We were not dissapointed!  When we arrived, long time friends of both mine and Jesse, Lance and Linda Duncalfe, were to be "mentors" of sorts for the week and our contact while we are way for the month.  We pumped about all the people we have met here.  There are three teams going out this summer;  Peru, Kenya (that's us), and a Dance team to the UK.

We are blown away by the depth of character of the the young leaders out here and we are excited to learn all we can from everyone we meet here.  Some have vast over seas experience and so Jesse and I are attempting to learn everything we can.  If you don't know much about Venture Teams International, look them up.  Perhaps one of there programs is right for you (that is one SHAMELESS plug! :)

We love you all and we miss you guys!  Keep praying that God will teach us much and meet us intimately here at Discovery Lodge
